The Best place to see Colobus Monkeys? - Zanzibar!

Rwanda and Uganda are exquisite destinations for observing primates: gorillas, chimpanzees and other monkeys. One of the favourite monkeys are the black-and-white Colobus monkeys! The Colobus monkey has no thumb! The Greek word kolobos, meaning "cut short" and describes the missing thumbs, which allow faster branchiation because thumbs do not get caught in the branches. Print featureSafaris featuring this feature Another caracteristic is that Colobus monkeys are leaf-eaters and ruminants, with four chambered stomachs just like cows. Bacterial fermentation in the monkeys` stomachs breaks-down the cellulose. Colobus Monkeys forage over a much wider area than other monkeys. Their range is 24 times that of red-tailed and blue Monkeys. The Eastern Black and White Colobus (colobus guereza monkeys) have a U-shaped cape of long white hair extending from the shoulders and meets across the lower back. The beautiful black fur of a Colubus strongly contrasts with the long white mantle and beard around the face. This type is the one that is found in Kibale Forest NP in Uganda but also in Kenya and Tanzania. The Angolan Black and White Colobus (colobus angolensis) has long white whiskers beginning at the temples and surrounding the face; the forehead is black. The coat is glossy and black, with long white epaulets. The tail is usually black and short-haired for half to two-thirds of its length and white towards the end. This is the type that you will find in Nyungwe Forest NP in Rwanda. It's the only place where you can find large troups of two hunderd Colobus Monkeys. More difficult to see are the Red Colobus monkeys (Procolobus rufomitratus) present in most areas where chimpanzees occur. The Red Colobus seems to be the prefered prey in the chimps' diet. Populations of black-and-white colobus monkeys appear to be stable in the Ugandan forest remnants, while their cousins, the Red Colobus monkeys are in decline. Some scientist predict even their extinction! The best place to see one of the species of Red Colobus monkeys is Zanzibar! The Zanzibar Red Colobus (Piliocolobus kirkii) is a species of Red Colobus monkey endemic to Unguja, the main island of the Zanzibar archipelago. If you like observing primates, take a beach holiday after your safari and go to Zanzibar, take a half-day excursion during your stay and visit Jozani Forest! It's truly the best place to observe one of the species of Colobus monkeys at a very close range! Jozani Forest is part of the Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park. There are several nature trails, so you can stay an hour or a half-day. An official guide is obligatory if you want to see the monkeys inside the Forest. The best time to visit Jozani is early in the morning or late afternoon when the wildlife is at its most active. The light is superb for photographing the Zanzibar Red Colobus Monkeys. The Zanzibar Red Colobus is endangered and there are only about 1.500 monkeys left.

Just five minutes from Circular Quay, you can hear stories of hanging and hauntings on a ghost tour, wander the weekend markets or climb the span of the Harbour Bridge. In amongst the maze of sandstone lanes and courtyards, you’ll find historic workman’s cottages and elegant terraces, art galleries, hotels with harbour views and Sydney’s oldest pubs. 2. Hit the world-famous harbour Sail past the Opera House on a chartered yacht or paddle from Rose Bay in a kayak. Take a scenic cruise from Circular Quay or Darling Harbour, past waterfront mansions, national parks and Shark, Clark, Rodd and Goat islands. Tour historic Fort Denison or learn about the life of Sydney’s first inhabitants, the Gadigal people, on an Aboriginal cultural cruise. Watch the harbour glitter from the green parklands of the Royal Botanic Gardens, which curves around its edge. Or take in the view from a waterfront restaurant in Mosman, on the northern side of the bridge, or Watsons Bay at South Head. 3. Visit Manly on the ferry Travel across Sydney Harbour on a ferry to Manly, which sits between beaches of ocean surf and tranquil inner harbour. Wander through native bushland on the scenic Manly to Spit Bridge walk, learn to scuba-dive at Cabbage Tree Bay or ride a bike to Fairy Bower. Picnic at Shelly Beach on the ocean and sail or kayak from Manly Wharf round the harbour. Hire a scooter and do a round trip of northern beaches such as Narrabeen and Palm Beach. Explore the shops, bars and cafes along the bustling pine tree-lined Corso and dine at world-class restaurants with water views.

Enjoy café culture and top shopping in Paddington Meander through the Saturday markets, browse fashion boutiques on bustling Oxford Street or discover the antique shops and art galleries in upmarket Woollahra. Visit the 1840s Victoria Barracks Army base, open to the public once a week, and see restored Victorian terraces on wide, leafy streets. 5. Walk from Bondi to Coogee

Take in breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean as you walk the winding, sea-sculpted sandstone cliffs between Bondi and Coogee. Swim in the famous Bondi Icebergs rock pool or just watch the swimmers with a sunset cocktail from the restaurant above. See wild waves in Tamarama, nicknamed Glamarama for the beautiful people who lie on its golden sand. From mid-October to November, the stretch from here to Bondi is transformed into an outdoor gallery for the Sculptures by the Sea exhibition. You can surf, picnic on the grass or stop for a coffee at family-friendly Bronte. Or swim, snorkel or scuba dive in Clovelly and tranquil Gordon’s Bay. In the beginning was the castle

The Middle Ages, the time of knights and chivalry, was the heyday of castle building: thousands of fortresses were constructed all over Germany, with the turreted walls and towers that make them seem so romantic to us today. These bastions of Gothic and Romanesque architecture are treasure troves of sagas, legends and fairytales but also reminders of the grim power battles in which their owners once engaged.

Burghausen Castle

The longest castle in Europe (1,043 metres) and one of Germany's largest, it perches high above the small baroque town of Burghausen in Upper Bavaria on the Austrian border, just like in a fairytale. Its many towers have seen more than a thousand years of history. This monument to late-medieval fortress architecture is laid out like a vast picture spread. The castle's present appearance with its fortified towers, walls which are five metres thick in places, outer wards, keep, ditches, banqueting halls and drawbridges dates from the 13th to 15th centuries. It also has dark chapters in its history, as evidenced by the witches' tower and torture tower (now a museum), the "Spinnhäusl" for female prisoners and the Prechtl Tower, in which the executioner lived in the 18th century.

Neuschwanstein Castle, Hohenschwangau

Neuschwanstein is known all over the world as a symbol of idealised romantic architecture and the tragic tale of its lord. After Ludwig II's sovereignty was taken away, he withdrew into his own world of myths, legend and fairytales on a rugged mountain peak by the Pöllat gorge. He had already felt the lure of the Middle Ages as a child prince growing up in medieval Hohenschwangau Castle. When Ludwig II started construction of Neuschwanstein in 1869, he united aspects of the Wartburg, a quintessentially German castle that had only been restored a year before, with those described in the Castle of the Holy Grail from Wagner's “Parsifal”. Neuschwanstein Castle, which was only given this name after Ludwig II's death, unashamedly harks back to the German Romanesque of the 13th century. Indeed the southern wing was only completed in 1891, five years after the king's mysterious death at Lake Starnberg.
